Welcome to Palena
The town of Palena, is located on the left bank of the upper course of the river Aventino. Awarded with the "Orange flag" for tourism, the country sees the presence of settlements from the Palaeolithic era. Roman finds, such as tombs and buildings, suggest that this area was inhabited continuously, until it became a fief in upper-middle ages. Many families made it their home, and in several cases, Palena was even Lordship. Reflecting the rich past, it has remained the original castle of the 12th century, located in the highest part of the old country, unfortunately subject to several reconstructions due to numerous earthquakes and bombings of World War II. Around the Castle there are many churches, such as those dedicated to San Rosario, San Falco and San Francesco. Tourists destination are the two museums of Palena, i.e MuseoGeopaleontologico Alto Aventino, inside the Castle, and Museo of Marsican Bear, outside the town. Favorite destination especially for children is the Brown Bear fauna Area that hosts three likeable little girly bears, Catherine, Iris and Daisy. Leaving f the town you can visit the charming Hermitage of the Madonna dell’Altare, situated on a cliff, which makes possible the entrance to the building only by one side, built by Celestine monks. The most important event for the inhabitants of Palena is the feast dedicated to the Patron Saint on July 2.
