Welcome to Altino
The small town of Altino is located on a rocky spur overlooking the Aventino Valley to the Adriatic coast in an area dotted with small towns. The village has a medieval origin and the characteristic configuration of a fortified village. Seems to have been founded as a refuge for Venetian refugees escaped from the Unni led by Attila, landed at the mouth of the Sangro River, which, given the rock surrounded by green woods, they would have it chosen as the ideal place to build a village. The Earliest records appear in the 12th century, when Altino began his role as a fief, with a succession of different owners. To visit in the medieval village there are the churches dedicated to the Madonna delleGrazie, to Santa Maria delPopolo and to San Rocco, the monumental fountain of the XV century and some illustrious palaces. The last weekend of August there is a very special event in the village, the Festival of the sweet pepper of Altino, a culinary palio among the town districts, where the main ingredient is the sweet pepper of Altino, to whom is also dedicated a Museum and documentation centre, hosted by Palazzo Rossetti, in the heart of the old town.
