Situated on a rocky outcrop, Altino stands over the Aventino valley. The valley is rich in vegetables and fruit in the lower part while vines and olives grow on its hills. Built in the heart of the historic centre, the Parish Church of Santa Maria del Popolo is testament to the ancient origins of this characteristic town. The existence of the church was first documented in the 14th century and though its design recalls the medieval structure, the building does not retain original pieces. There is significant evidence of restructuring work that took place during the renaissance and baroque periods. The church can be reached via a steep stone stairway that compensates for the notable difference in height between the church and the street. The facade is divided into three parts by square stone piers - square bottomed columns. A rectangular tympanum sits above the entrance. In the centre of the façade, in line with the entrance, is located a large rectangular window, while on the sides another two windows are aligned vertically. The bell tower is made of perforated brick and is situated on the left hand side of the church. The interior consists of three naves divided by square piers dressed as pilasters and painted as imitation marble, topped with ionic style capitals with garlands and spirals. The central nave has a barrel vault roof that leads to the apse. The arches of the side naves have coffered ceilings decorated with plaster garlands and rosettes, and there is a ribbed vaulted ceiling over the arches. The interior of the church is decorated white and gold plaster garlands and cartouches set on a pastel toned coloured background. The altar, situated between two series of Corinthian columns, is on a ledge with an entablature. Inside the tympanum is a statue of the Madonna, while on the sides there are two statues of saints.
