The Church of Assunta

Locality: Sant'Eusanio del Sangro
TAG: Churches

Located in the Sangro valley, among cultivated fields and the unique backdrop of the Maiella massif, Sant Eusanio del Sangro is notable for its rich architectural heritage. Places of particular interest in this small town include the splendid neo-gothic church of Assunta. The building dates back to the beginning of the 20th century, created  based on a design by Nicola Villani of Lanciano. The site was previously the location of the Finamore chapel from the 1600s, the main façade is the work of the sculptors Nicola De Virgiliis and Giuseppe di Pennapiedimonte. The long construction procedure of the church was concluded in the 1940s when the apse and bell tower were completed. The façade clad entirely in stone slabs in a neo-gothic style develops horizontally on two levels. The lower level is punctuated by four pilasters, at the centre is an entrance with a lancet arch and in the side sectors there are double lancet windows. The pilasters on the lower level follow the higher level and terminate in a small pyramid shaped roof. In the central sector there is a rose window, while on the sides there is a couple of double lancet windows, similar and in correspondence to those of the lower level. In the central part there is a bell tower with a clock at the centre. In the side walls there are some simple glass windows that filter the light inside the building. In the lower part of the bay there are niches and cross vaults held up by pilasters.
