Church of San Pancrazio and the remains of the convent

Locality: Roccascalegna
TAG: Churches

Near the cemetery of Roccascalegna the Church of San Pancrazio stands, adjacent to a Benedictine Abbey of the 9th century, now disappeared. The building of the Church probably dates back to the 12th century; an inscription placed in the upper part of the facade bears the date of 1205 as year of foundation.
The Abbey next to the Church had a great importance in the past, but then decayed until disappearing: in its area the current churchyard of the town was created.
The façade has a horizontal crowning and is supported by lateral buttresses. On its left a wall, corresponding to the inner aisle, serves as a link between the main body of the building and the bell tower with two barrel vaults, slightly higher than the crowning of the facade. The portal of the front entrance is surrounded by jambs and a stone architrave and is decorated with plant motifs. In the lunette there is a bas-relief; above the façade presents a wide window with a segmental arch. A secondary portal, decorated like the façade, is situated on the right wall of the Church. The interior has a stone outside masonry and is divided into two aisles by four large lancet arches supported by pillars.
The roof of the nave, built in recent years, consists of a planking supported by wooden trusses and beams.
