The Castle of Roccascalegna is nestled on an impressive sandstone rock, more than 100-metre high. Thanks to technical-military innovations, in the 12th century the castle was known as “Ruqqah Gawrali”, as reported by geographer El Idrisi in his “The Book of Roger”. Considering the defence potential of this place, the Lombards created a settlement that – in the Norman-Swabian period (11th-12th cent.) – was enhanced with the actual castle. In the 15th century, due to the new threat of firearms, the castle had to be adapted by rounding the towers. Finally, the Castle of Roccascalegna originated the legend of “jus primae noctis”, decreed in 1646 by baron Corvo de Corvis, who claimed for himself the first night with the new brides of the fief.
