Firstly known as Frentano outpost then as a Roman colony, the name Paglieta was documented for the fist time at the end of the 12th century. Strolling through the narrow streets of the centre of the town visitors can soon find the Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Cielo that was originally founded in the 16th century. According to a now lost inscription, the construction of the church dates back to between 1807 and 1841 on the site of the ancient chapel. In 1956 the two sacristies were demolished and the restoration of the floor and altars was completed. The facade is in open brickwork. Above the entrance there is a curved tympanum in perforated brick. The three naves are subdivided by pilasters, the central nave has a barrel-vaulted ceiling while the side naves have ribbed vaults. The different formal and construction levels of the upper part of the façade suggest construction from during a different era. The decoration is created with plaster cornices in various colours.
