Against the backround of the wide and leafy Rome Square is located the Church of Santa Maria of the Recommended, preceded by a wide stairway access. Originally belonged to the Francescano Order, from which was founded in the second half of the sixteenth century, today is attributable to the secular clergy.
The facade has a horizontal crowning, typical of many Abruzzo churches, and is of a simple design: the center part is bounded by awls that above hold an entablature and a small gable; in the inside of this partition opens the only portal of access, the center part is defined on a frame that rests on ledges, and a semicircular window. In the two side parts opens as many rectangular windows. The most interesting architectural element is situated on the left side of the building: it is a secondary portal that resembles the Romanesque style of Abruzzo, but dates back to the sixteenth century; a series of rounded arches, supported by small columns, constitutes the superior frame of the portal, while the cornerstone and archway are decorated with reliefs of phytomorphic figures and floral motifs. In the bezel is placed another low relief representing the symbolic lamb carrying a cross. In the inside two series of square pillars hold rounded arches that distinguish the center aisle from the side ones; these include various spans, of which each one is covered crossbar, while the center one has a trussed wooden roof. The sanctuary is preceded by a pointed arch, not congruent with the style of the rest of the Church. The side altars are decorated with low reliefs in stucco, while the superior one is inlaid with colored marble.
The apse is enriched by a wooden triptych of the sixteenth century, representing the Virgin Mary of Mercy, attributed to Giovan Francesco of Rimini or to Pietro Alemanni.
