The parish church of San Remigio is situated close to the district of Torrevecchia, historical old town of Fara San Martino, overlooking a plaza commonly called “Piano dei Santi”.
His foundation, according to historical sources, dates back to the thirteenth century. The façade is tripartite: the central body leans slightly forward from the sides and it is obviously higher than these. Surrounded by a series of pilasters, it ends in the upper part by a gable. A rectangular window enclosed in a frame opens above the central portal.
The two wings of the façade, well defined by pilasters, are connected to the central one by volute; wings both are opened by smaller portals surmounted by small circular windows. So the overall design of the façade is characterized by an effective symmetry in all its parts. Inside, the church is divided into three naves, which only the central one of ends with an apse; while the apse is decorated with mosaics that recall to early Christian motifs, the rest of the room, both in the center aisle and in the side ones, has colored stucco decorations. Vaults differ between the central nave, which has barrel vault, and sides, which instead have sailing ones. The church houses a painting of great artistic value, work of the painter Tanzio di Varallo, from Lombardy, but operating in Abruzzo in the early seventeenth century; it depicts the circumcision of the Child Jesus attended by Saints Francesco d’Assisi and Carlo Borromeo. Tanzio style reveals the influence of Caravaggio for the sagacious painting dosage of lights and shadows.
