The Civic Museums of Guardiagrele offer a journey through history with two fascinating collections.
? Archaeological Museum "F. Ferrari" – A tour through artifacts that narrate the life of the ancient populations of the Maiella, featuring burial goods, jewelry, weapons, and artifacts from the Paleolithic to the Hellenistic era. One of the most striking reconstructions is the Tomb of the Warrior of Comino.
The entrance hall displays artifacts from the excavations of Don Filippo Ferrari (early 1900s) and original documents. The following rooms showcase burial goods (9th century BC), jewelry, weapons, and the reconstruction of Tomb 38 of the “Warrior of Comino.” Among the most important pieces are a replica of the “Stele of Guardiagrele” (7th century BC), Magna Graecia ceramics, and the rich burial set of Tomb 22 (4th century BC). Room 6 houses prehistoric artifacts, including Neanderthal tools and items over 300,000 years old.
? Medieval Antiquarium "A. Cadei" – Sculptures, capitals, and medieval architectural decorations bear witness to the artistic and urban evolution of the city, showcasing remarkable works from the 12th to the 15th century.
Upon entering Room 1, visitors are greeted by two stylophoric stone lions and a sculpted capital, remnants of the ancient monastery of San Pietro Confessore. In Room 2, fragments of portals, capitals, and sculptures illustrate the city’s architectural evolution between the 12th and 15th centuries. Room 3 features Gothic works by German craftsmen from the 15th century, including decorated altars, a fresco fragment, and an elegant corbel adorned with three interwoven female faces. Finally, Room 4 contains artifacts from different periods, such as a headless statue of Saint Michael the Archangel and the earliest version of the city’s coat of arms, reflecting Guardiagrele’s history and transformations over time.
