The Museum of Costume and Tradition in Guardiagrele is one of the city's most significant cultural institutions. Founded in the 1980s thanks to the dedication of local enthusiasts, the museum offers a valuable testimony to rural and artisanal life between the 19th and 20th centuries, a crucial period in Guardiagrele's history.
With approximately seven hundred artifacts, the museum narrates two fundamental aspects of past life in Guardiagrele: that of the patriarchal family, with its rhythms, traditions, and emotional bonds, and that of the working community, depicted through images and tools that tell the story of traditional crafts now lost to time.
The museum's rooms recreate typical environments of domestic and artisanal life. The kitchen is an accurate reconstruction of a traditional setting, featuring an oven, fireplace, kneading troughs, and baking utensils, as well as a space dedicated to spinning and weaving activities, with a loom and other tools. The bedroom, on the other hand, showcases customs related to marriage and dowries, with a section dedicated to women's clothing and handcrafted jewelry worn on special occasions.
The hall of arts and crafts celebrates local craftsmanship, displaying ancient tools used by cabinetmakers, carpenters, dyers, shoemakers, potters, chair makers, coppersmiths, and blacksmiths, illustrating the ingenuity and skill of Guardiagrele’s artisans.
