The place occupied by the parish church of San Nicola of Bari, in the old town of Taranta Peligna is truly unique: situated on a overhanging cliff on the valley of River Aventino, the Church dominates from above a vast panorama of rare beauty. Its position is explained by the fact that although existing before the 14th century, it was restored in the 18th century using parts of the old castle, placed in a vantage point for defensive reasons. To entry the holy building you have to go up a double flight staircase. In the facade divided into three parts by lesenes you can admire the artistic portal of the end of the sixteenth century, surmounted by a broken triangular tympanum. Its bronze doors are been created recently by current carver Santeusanio. Above the portal there is a rectangular window; the crowning of the segmental arch facade consists of a cornice of roof tiles. On the right, above, there is the clock. Also the bell tower is interesting. It is situated together with the Church at the back. The bell tower is divided into two parts by a string course, the belfry is open on four sides by arches. In the interior there are some noteworthy works of art: among them, a painting of the 17th century with Our Lady of the Assumption and saints Nicola, Donato, Biagio ,Ubaldo and a crucifix on Panel, of the 15th century, attributed to Antoniazzo di Romano. According to a local legend, this crucifix was found by a farmer who, become suspicious by the sudden stop of his cattle in the field, had dug into the soil up to discover the holy object.
