Probably the original building of the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore dates back to the 14th century, but there are no documents. During the time it was subject to various renovation and extension works; the current aspect seems to be dated back to the early nineteenth century.
The admission to the church is from a side entrance, since the main facade overlooks an alley located at an altitude much lower than its floor plane. Therefore there is no facade portal, replaced by a large window and two lateral niches. On the left side there is the gateway, with jambs and lintel stone. Against the same side stands the Bell Tower with a square base, equipped with a cornice and a dome roof; this is particularly interesting for the blue tile mosaic, which evokes decorative forms present especially in the churches of southern Italy. The interior has a basilican plan with square apse nave and side aisles. Late baroque style decorative stucco coating, , is more or less present on all surfaces. On the facade there is a painting representing the assumption of Virgin Mary among angels and saints, dating back to 1864, realized by painter Ferdinando Palmerio of Guardiagrele. In the Church is the Giulio Caracciolo’s tomb, who was Lord of Roio del Sangro in the middle of16th century.
