The area of Vallevò, in the province of Chieti, offers a landscape of extraordinary naturalistic importance, the entire area, in fact, is characteized by the presence of the hollows -  the so-called Fossi -  located  perpendicular to the coast. The Fossi were eroded by torrents and include, among the vegetation, some interesting natural caves. During the war these were used as hide outs by the partisan rebels. Immersed in the wild vegetation, the most important Fossi in the area are those called the Farfalle, which mark the council boundary between the territory of San Vito and San Giovanni. The Grotte delle Farfalle – or Butterfly Caves-  can be reached easily in a few minutes’ walk along an uphill path. This special place, which in 2007 became a protected natural reserve is the home for some treasures of natural beauty of exceptional interest. According to local tradition during some periods of the year the areas teams with thousands of butterflies – which give the area its name - attracted to the favourable environmental conditions. The vegetation is typical of fluvial valleys, rich in species of tree and woodland vegetation such as poplars, willow and elm. The fauna includes animals such as beech martens and badgers and small rodents such as the hazel dormouse and the garden dormouse have found this area to be an ideal habitat. Even the potaman fluviatile, the now rare river crab lives undisturbed in this small paradise.
