The ancient village of Montenerodomo stands on a rocky hill at 1130 meters altitude; in its vicinity there are some parts of megalithic walls, built with accumulated dry stones. They are the remains of the Samnite, which historically is considered the oldest in the area. Benedetto Croce, whose family came from Montenerodomo, in his historical essay on this center speaks of a "oppidum" witnessed by the "surpluses as poetically called Cyclopean walls," as if they had been erected by the size of the giant Cyclops. Between the fourth and third centuries BC the town was abandoned and everything moved into the flat area of Juvanum, where there are remains of the second settlement. It 's probably due to a greater position and accessibility to Juvanum that the came a new settlement instead of the uncomfortable position where the old Samnite one was erased. A further move took place in the middle ages, when, following the widespread phenomenon of "castellamento" (idea of castle and its around area), the people preferred living in high places with inconvenient access, to defend themselves from enemy attacks. The living conditions of the time, in fact, were made very difficult by the frequent hostility between their countries and neighboring feudal lords, so that the reasons for the defense were more prevalent than other needs. Therefore the inhabitants of Montenerodomo returned to repopulate the site, now abandoned, which was inhabited by their Samnite ancestors, while the place that gave birth to the city of Juvanum was abandoned and fell into dispair.
