Lanciano vecchia is the heart of the old town. Here there was the ancient castle, and five parish churches and numerous dwellings. Today only two of these oldest churches remain, while the names of those demolished have remained attached to the Piazzas that took their place. Near the Largo di San Maurizio there is an interesting house and shop from the 1400s, the only remaining example of the architectural style of the 1400s, in which the gothic lines are emphasized by the sharp arches of the shop. As indicated on a commemorative stone inside the building, the rich Lanciano merchant Nicolaus Rubeus in 1434 decided to construct the house on two levels that could serve the double function of both residence and shop. The building is on two levels separated by a floor marking cornice and has a double slanting roof. On the ground floor is an architrave entrance which probably served as the entrance to the house and three arched entrances that provided access onto the shop. The construction is in brick while the entry portal and arches onto the bottega are in carved stone. Also in stone are the counters next to the door created in sculpted stone. On the piano nobile –or noble floor – there are three stone mullioned windows. The cornice marking the floors is in a saw-tooth pattern which was common in medieval buildings in Abbruzzo, made from perforated brick and stones laid at an angle.
