In 1997 the greek artist Costas Varotsos realized in the locality of Morgia of Gessopalena an opera which he called "Horizons" and dedicated, as symbolic Monument to the Resistance, at all those people that in Abruzzo and in Italy had fought during World War II against the German occupation and the dictatorship of the Republic of Salò to restore freedom and democracy to the Italian people. Costas Varotsos works on glass, so decides to place an art installation on the rocky peek of Morgia. He fills with layers of glass the form of the so-called "Samson's knee", until forming a sort of upside down pyramid.
In this way he virtually fills the saddle between two peaks of the mountain, almost to create a new skyline, and at the same time returns to the nature of the place that rock material that in the past was extracted for human constructions. Thanks to the natural transparency of the material adopted in the installation, Costas Varotsos can remove the form of its materiality, so that in a clear day it is possible that the sky and the glass assume the same color.
The artist entitles it "Horizons" to underline the particular quality of his creation, that allows to look beyond itself, in other words to sense far away appearances although covering the character of a work of art, of a human manufacture. On the other hand, the close connection that Costas Varotsos was able to create between the place of installation and his work, that cannot exist if not where he was able to place it, is a tribute to Abruzzo's land, a way to exalt its natural beauty.
