The Church of Santa Maria in Monte Planizio of Lettopalena is what remains of a Benedictine abbey which was active until the 13th century. The current building recently reopened for worship probably dates back to 16th century. The façade of the building is divided into three parts, the central body, higher than the lateral ones, culminates in a steep profile where a small belfry stands. At the sides are two bodies of lesser height, which rest on the central part through steeps
The entrance is located in the center of the facade, stone crowned and covered by a lintel resting on brackets. Above the portal there is a composite sculpture representing the Passion of Christ. Higher there is a rectangular window . In the façade several filling materials were placed between the stones that form the hangings, as a sculpted human head ,a wheel-shaped ashlar, and other small bas-reliefs, like a cross between two palm trees, another cross inside a heart, probably in order to make the appearance of the bare facade more varied and pleasant. Near the Church there is a largely ruined building, near which a bell tower is. Note that along the entrance way there are scattered stone fragments, as parts of columns and capitals, which may have been taken from the remains of an ancient Church, San Nicola, destroyed by war during World War II.
