Situated at 1343 meters above sea level, the commune of Gamberale is the highest in the province of Chieti. Among beech, fir and oak woods, a beautiful terrace viewpoint allows visitors to enjoy suggestive sceneries. In the homonymous square in Gamberale there is the parish church of San Lorenzo Martire, which was built in the early 18th century. Probably in subsequent times, to remedy structural difficulties, supporting buttresses were added and today they are present on its downstream side.
The Church has a gabled façade, on which there is a portal, above this a window and even higher an oeil-de-boeuf. Note the composite cornice of the portal, which was modified in ensuing times. At one side of the Church stands the Bell Tower, divided into three levels by string courses; the last section of the Bell Tower made up of bricks , differs from the other two below which are plastered. The Interior of the Church has a single nave and a barrel vault. There are various objects of Art in the building. Among them note the organ situated on the choir above the entrance. It was built in 1850 by the organ builders Gennaro and Nichola D'onofrio. The case and the decorations are made up of wood. It presents 25 pipes, a keyboard with 50 keys and a eight pedals keyboard. The "windchest", or the case of the organ which receives air from the bellows and sends it to the pipes, made up of walnut, is enclosed by panels which contain 53 wedge fans.
