Palazzo Barbolani

Locality: Colledimacine
TAG: Castles and palaces

In the highest part of the town there is Palazzo Barbolani, whose main facade fronts onto the old town square. It was built in the late eighteenth century with the use of what remained of the medieval castle, where various feudal families had lived over the centuries; today it is part of a complex of buildings: the Parish Church of San Nicola, which once served as the chapel of the castle, the remains of one of the gates of the village, the so-called " Casa dell’Arciprete ", which was the deconsecrated Church of San Rocco.
A bombardment during the second world war and deterioration caused by the neglect of the last years made the Palazzo almost unfit for use. Recently a small part was restored, while other additional buildings have substantially changed the overall aspect. The current name of the Palazzo derives from its owners by the end of the 19th century, brothers Achille and Raffaele Ulisse Barbolani, belonging to an ancient family of Tuscan origin. The structure of the building consists of an L union of two buildings whose main facade is placed on one side of the adjacent square. The three levels are defined outside by string-courses ; the windows have architraves; the cornice that close the facade presents traces of decoration, perhaps triglyphs. Next to the building there are the ruins of a portal that once gave access to the castle. Moreover there are some traces of a defensive wall, certainly of old age, by which you can think that it was a fortification intended to protect from enemy assaults either the castle or the village that surrounded it.
