Church of Santissimo Salvatore

Locality: Civitella Messer Raimondo
TAG: Churches

The village of Civitella Messer Raimondo is mirrored on Sant’Angelo lake, also known as Casoli lake, formed by the artificial dam built on Aventino river. In Piazza Roma is located the church of Santissimo Salvatore, which should date back to the thirteenth century, according to some literature sources. Recently it has been restored.
Striking at first glance, the yellowish color of the painting of the façade that, however, has a a rather simple overall design. Note that the crowning gable with fitting curved lines, the corner pillars, the frames of the openings are some of the residual elements of the primitive structure of the façade, which once was covered with a stone facing.
Above the main door is set a triangular pediment that encloses a mosaic with the image of St. Erasmus; secondary gateways open on the two sides of the central one. On the three portals appear circular windows which let light get into the interior. The church, basilica planted, is divide into three nave: on sides of the central one follow a series of composite pilaster supporting the entablature, which in turn holds the barrel vault. Instead in the aisles, the vaults are sailing and bays are two. Both pilasters that antas are covered with colored plaster in faux marble.
