Situated in the most ancient part of the old town of Civitaluparella, St. Peter Apostle's Church is mentioned in documents from the early years of the 12th century. Despite having been modified in the course of time, has original features: its typical inner structure with two aisles, not common in the churches of the region.
Outside, the facade shows a heavily gabled profile and a special design, consisting of a system of vertical pilasters and a horizontal cornice that seems to frame it in a well-ordered scheme. The splayed Portal is surrounded by blocks of different colours; above there is a niche with a half-length Saint Peter’s statue; at its sides there are Solomonic columns. Still higher up the facade there is a circular window. The big Bell Tower, that stands on the left of the holy building, is divided into three overlapping parts and defined by stone cornices. In the interior of the Church between the two aisles there are the partition pillars that support round arches. The various bays are covered with round units resting on pendentives. The aisles don’t close with apses, but with flat walls on which are leaned altars with niches and statues of Saints.
Note that the right aisle width is smaller than the left and on the wall there is a series of altars with statues of Saints. The interior of the Church is covered with stucco and gilt decorations, while the pilasters that mark the various parts are painted in imitation of motley marble. These special decorative elements can be dated back to more recent times than the primitive building structure.
