The centre inhabitat of Archi, a typical medieval accomodation, is dominated by the ancient Castle, whose records date back around th year one thousand, when at the river Sangro there was a locality called Fara Adami. Today, after so many centuries, the Castle is in ruins. Quadrangular, it was protected by two towers, one of a circular form and the other of a squar form, as well as a curtain wall which opened on several slits for the use of defensive weapons. Contained inside a large courtyard with the well and a cistern for collecting and storing rainwater. The history of Archi is linked to landowners that during the centuries alternated in possession of the Castle. Among them we remenber Martino de Segna that in mid five hundred had it restored by the master Antonio Malerba, but because of the expenses incured in the work was forced to sell at auction. Archi was also possessed by Fabrizio Colonna and by other noble families, of which the last was the Adimari family, marquis of Bomba.
If in ancient times the Castle had a defensive function from enemies assaults, afterwards, ceasod these periods, it was transformed into a noble residence. The late eighteenth century, when the feudal system was abolished, it became the property of the Royal court of Naples and after the Unifiction of Italy it was purchased by the Lannutti family, which thought to restore it to repair the damages suffered by the building during World War II.
Currently only few remnants remain: the east side id completely gone, while partly preserved the external walls of the south and west sides.
But even if reduced in these precarious conditions, the Castle is the historical symbol of a community, that through the centuries of its existance has remained clustered through its walls.
