According to tradition, in 1774 a woman prayed before the image of the Virgin, who then appeared and expressed the wish that in exchange for the protection of the town’s inhabitants, a church be built in her honour. The news spread among the faithful and the sick chose the location as a destination for pilgrimage, the fame of the miracles spread and with the offers from visitors the construction of the Shrine began. The building, according to an inscription that has since been lost, was completed in 1669 and in the same year opened for worship. The story of the Church of Santa Maria del Popolo in the small town of Frisa is also marked by the sad events of the Second World war, which caused the collapse of the central nave requiring a significant reconstruction. Today only the altar area remains from the 18th century structure. The brick façade is articulated in two levels by a double order of openings above one another. On the sides of the entrance are two rooms with white intonaco arches, inside which there are two small windows that recall the fenestrelle devotionis of the original church. Aligned with the entrance is a room painted with sacred images and a window on the sides of which can be found some sculptures on a celeste background. The interior is divided into bays with rectangular pilasters that also follow the pattern of the lateral niches with rib vaults. The walls are covered with intonaco and are decorated with plaster cornices, which are also present on the rich altar of the nave. On the left of the church the bell tower is divided into three levels by cornices and with arched openings. In the upper part, above the bell room there is another bell. The baroque altar used to have a canvas from the 1500s showing the Virgin, this was stolen in 1980 and has since been replaced with a painted reinterpretation by Pietro Annigoni in 1982 of the Madonna with child.
