The Church of Salvatore

Locality: Torino di Sangro
TAG: Churches

The existence of this church was documented as far back as the 1300s, it was, in fact, cited as belonging to the Badie di Santo Stefano and Arabona, but the construction in brick was built at the end of the 16th century. The baroque interior underwent a notable intervention in the mid 1800s restored between 1848 and 1849 commissioned by the archpriest Alessio Tessitore who enlarged the central nave, constructed the chapels, restored the altars and in 1857 decorated the vault with frescoes by De Benedictis. The parish church of San Salvatore is located in the upper part of the town and has a large façade in perforated brick, divided into two levels. On the sides at the front there are two entrances with tympanums, the higher level with a bay with a frontispiece with a curved tympanum is marked at the centre by an opening surrounded by a balustrade. On the left side there is a bell tower, a solid square plan structure. On the opposite side is a small bell tower with a bell inside. The interior has three naves, divided by a series of arches, the central one has a cross vaulted ceiling with lunettes: the side naves, are lower and the ceiling is a series of Ribbed vaults. One of the bays of the left hand nave has a noble chapel in a semicircular shape, richly decorated, belonging to the  Priori family from 1858.
