The town of Taranta Peligna is situated on the mountainside of Mont Majella, in a narrow and deep valley carved by River Aventino.
Its territory, in an area predominantly mountainous, is rich in caves and ravines created by the
millennial underground water flow. The geological basis of Majella is calcareous and rests on a stratum of clay soil: since the limestone is porous, the rainwater can penetrate easily, but find resistance of waterproof stratum below and this gives origin to natural springs that flow from the lower areas of the mountain side.
Among these sources are of particular interest those found near Taranta Peligna. Leaving the town on the road leading to Lettopalena there is a path on the right which leads to “Acquevive” springs so called just for their primary characteristic of constant and everlasting flow. They are springs that emerge on the surface creating a very fascinating landscape. They form a suggestive river Park: from the mountainside on which Taranta Peligna stands in a mixed landscape of rocks and natural vegetation waters are seen flowing toward the Valley and feeding various streams and tributaries of the River Aventino. The area is a tourist attraction of good level thanks to its natural interest and charm of the surrounding landscape, a charm that also caught a writer of exquisite taste as Gabriele D'Annunzio.
