An area with a great natural value, the Reserve stretches on 300 hectares around the artificial Serranella lake, which has shortly become a very lively marsh: being close to the coast and thanks to the meeting of the rivers Sangro and Aventino, it has become one of the most important wet areas for the stop of migrating birds along the Adriatic route and for animals in general. Thanks to regular interventions for environmental recovery, this area – formerly a WWF Oasis and then a Regional Natural Reserve – is restoring the richness of river habitats with the presence of small lakes and flooded areas, in order to bring the environment and the landscape back to their origins. The protected area features several plant communities, with species that are not common in the region.
