Welcome to Casoli
The town of Casoli sits on a hill overlooking the Valley of the Aventino, and has been inhabited since ancient times, in fact some excavations pointed out the presence of traces of Roman amphitheatre, aqueducts and some buildings, in Piana Laroma area. After the Romans, the ancient village of Abruzzo Casula was subjected to the Abbey of Montecassino, was later a fief, since sold to various families. In the 20th century, was almost entirely destroyed during World War II. Currently the country has developed in the plain below the hill and istaking off from a commercial point of view. To visit is the Ducal Castle, built around a pentagonal tower dating back to the 9th century, where the poet D'annunzio sometimes jurned, so much so that there is a room that bears his name. On the wing of the Castle stands the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, which together with it, formsthe core of the ancient village of Casoli. Continuing the walk, there are churches, ancient buildings and part of the walls. Descending from the village, you can relax on the shores of Lake Saint Angelo, also called Casoli, a natural reservoir born in 1958 by damming of the river Aventino to feed a power plant. From the Lake, glancing you will see the Tower of Prata, built around the 11th century to defend the village. In January the 15th, 16th and 17th theresacred representations of temptation of Sant’ Antonio Abatae, while, on October the 7th, 8th and 9th takes place the festivities in honor of Santa Reparata, protector of Casoli. If you stay over the Easter period, you can also assist to the infiorata, held during the Corpus Domini.
